Ft Benton to Havre Sampler

Near Carter, MT, the arid right-of-way is more reminiscent of Southern California.

It must have been pretty exciting riding in a dome car peering over the cliff down to the Missouri river.

The Carter depot, a classic GN standard design, was still standing in 2003.

The Coal Banks Coulee trestle provides a great opportunity to include a classic tall steel GN style trestle.

I could not believe it when researching for my layout. The USGS map looked like there was a tunnel in a very unexpected place!

Grain elevators are a plenty along the route. Here in Carter, MT three prairie skyscrapers adorn the otherwise unremarkable horizon.

Just west of Ft. Benton, MT, the GN rides along the bluffs above the Missouri.

I was thrilled to find the tunnel and portal intact on a driving vacation in 2003. How many nit pickers would claim a model of a tunnel like this is unrealistic.

$It\'s a short tunnel but its perfect for a model railroad. The portal says it was built in 1923.I believe the tunnel was constructed some 35 years after the railroad dirst arrived due to a more favorable alignment of trackage for the town of Ft. Benton.$

The Ft. Benton depot is unusual and far from the standard designs.

This is the Ft. Benton grain elevator.

This unusual structure appears to be an old service station. It is located in Big Sandy, MT.

My little piece of the Great Northern models element from the line between Great Falls and Havre, Montana.

Two major passenger trains passed over this line.

Great Falls, MT, the southern terminus of our inspiring line, sported an impressive brick station the serviced the fairly active passegner service from points north and south.

The 1957 Employee timetable indicate a daily east and west freight, local passenger and the daily Western Star.
